Maverick County Hospital District is observing Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in the month of March.
Did you know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States? Maverick County is no exception, as many residents of our community are diagnosed with colon cancer every year.
According to the National Cancer Institute, there are approximately 15 colon cancer diagnoses in Maverick County per year. This number could be higher due to many diagnoses often taking place in other areas when individuals travel out of town for medical services. The best prevention of colon cancer is early detection.
During National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the American Cancer Society and many other organizations highlight the need to do more to save lives from the nation’s second leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Patients are urged to talk about the importance of colorectal cancer screenings, which are recommended for people at average risk of developing the disease.
If you’re 50 years old or older, talk to your doctor about getting screened. Maverick County H hospital District’s Physician Specialty Group is available for any questions or assistance.
