Smoking Age To Increase By September 1

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed Senate Bill 21 into law which will raise the legal age from 18 to 21 on the purchase of any tobacco product, including cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.

The new law will go into effect on September 1, 2019, and will assist communities such a Maverick County in curbing teenage smoking.

The Maverick County Hospital District continuously promotes healthy living and applaud the State’s decision and actions to increase the age requirement.

Throughout the years, the Maverick County Hospital District, including the Oncology program, has helped thousands of community members of all ages with their medical needs. Knowing how harmful smoking can be to our citizens and how important it is to ensure students abstain from the effects of tobacco, we believe that Texas Senate Bill 21 greatly assists us in continuing our mission and helps our community to live healthier.
