Maverick County Hospital District and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Program Hold 4th Annual Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Event

Maverick County Hospital District and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Program held their 4th Annual Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness event on October 17 at the International Center for Trade.

The event was a great success, with multiple agencies participating in bringing breast cancer awareness to the community.

During the event, BCCS Director Luiza Cardoza Garza welcomed all in attendance and provided vital awareness information and details about the Maverick County Hospital District’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Services (BCCS) program.

“We are here to bring awareness to breast cancer and emphasize on the importance of screenings. We want to let our community know that we are here to assist the community in their medical needs as well as inform them of the many services offered by Maverick County Hospital District,” said Garza.

Eagle Pass City Councilwoman Yolanda Ramon was present and offered words of support on behalf of the city.

“I know that all of us are here either for prevention or because cancer has affected our families in some manner. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is an important and relevant topic as most of us have been affected by this disease in one way or another. We all know a person who has battled this disease. It is estimated that one in eight women will battle some form of evasive cancer in their lifetime,” said Ramon.

Ramon thanked the Maverick County Hospital District and its BCCS program for their work and dedication to battling breast cancer.

MCHD Administrators and participating agencies recognized several breast cancer survivors present who have been serviced by the Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Program. Irene Arizpe, a local resident who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, spoke to all in attendance and offered a glimpse of her diagnosis and strong will to survive. Arizpe spoke of her hardship with the disease but also offered words of encouragement and highlighted the importance of prevention and early detection.

“Cancer takes life from you, but at the same time it gives it to you,” said Arizpe. “It turns you into a strong person, a fighter. During this time I have learned to grow and confide in God and truly believe that everything will be fine.”

MCHD Board of Trustees Chairman Jesus Casas, CPA and longtime Board of Trustees member Juan Manuel Farias were present and offered their support to bringing awareness and medical services for residents of the community.

“I have always said that medical services must always keep pace with the growth in a community,” commented Farias. “That is why we at the Maverick County Hospital District continue fighting to provide the needed services for our community and region. We are doing everything possible to provide this services to you and hope that you come to us and use them.”

“I feel humbled to be able to be here representing you and to be able to work in bringing the needed medical services to our region,” said Chairman Casas. “My mother passed away from cancer and I feel so close to this cause of bringing awareness and preventive measure to battle this disease.”

During the event, MCHD offered free clinical breast exams to numerous participants in attendance. Other participating agencies also provided information regarding their programs during the events, including United Medical Centers, The Ryan White Program, Read Usborne Books, Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc., the Physician Specialty Group, Ram Security Services, LLC, Candles for Life, and more. The event also featured a performance by various local cheer squads and Adult Care Centers.

On behalf of Maverick County Hospital District’s Chief Executive Officer Alma Martinez, we want to thank all those who attended, and the members and organizations who helped make this event possible. Thank you for joining us in our fighting against breast cancer!
