Arthritis Awareness Month

Maverick County Hospital District is observing National Arthritis Awareness Month during the month of May.

During this time we join millions of others in bringing awareness to the growing prevalence of arthritis, the need for additional research and advocacy, and to encourage those individuals to seek treatment.

Arthritis — a leading cause of disability characterized by joint pain, swelling, and stiffness — currently affects 1 in 4 (54 million) American adults, and is projected to affect 78 million adults by 2040.

Nearly half of people with arthritis are limited in everyday activities such as walking, bending, or lifting a grocery bag. Arthritis is also common among people with heart disease and diabetes. About half of people with heart disease and diabetes report an arthritis diagnosis, which makes it more difficult for them to manage these conditions.

While arthritis encompasses more than 100 conditions, the most common forms are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and fibromyalgia.

So, how can people with arthritis effectively manage their symptoms? Adults with arthritis can reduce the effects of their symptoms by being physically active and seeking the necessary treatment.

This May, join us in our efforts to increase arthritis awareness and encourage others to seek the assistance needed to manage their ailment.
