National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month.

At this time, Maverick County Hospital District and Orthopedic Surgeon Andre L. Thomas, MD encourage everyone to #MoveInMay, but remember to continue to practice social distancing while being active.

There are so many ways to get moving, and many of them can be done while you stay at home. You can work out with an online video, go for a walk, take a bike ride, or dance to your favorite playlist. Whatever you do, make sure to do it safely.

If you or a loved one suffers an injury while exercising, such as knee pain and tears, fractures, sprains, strains, or dislocations, it is important to consult with a physician as soon as possible. Dr. Thomas specializes in sports medicine — a branch of medicine that deals with the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise.

Sports medicine specialists treat a wide range of these physical conditions including chronic overuse injuries, degenerative diseases, tendinitis and over-training syndrome, among other physical activity related injuries.

Celebrate National Physical Fitness & Sports Month with your family and join our community in promoting the importance of physical activity for both adults and children. Whether a bike ride, a run, or exercising at home, make sure to keep finding ways to continue being physically active — as long as you do it safely!
