Observing American Heart Disease Awareness Month

On February, Maverick County Hospital District is observing American Heart Disease Awareness Month. By raising awareness about heart disease and ways to prevent it, our community, organizations, and health professionals can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices.

February is designated as American Heart Disease Awareness Month across the nation. Locally, the disease is a serious matter as Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics show that the age adjusted coronary heart disease death rate for Maverick County, TX is 100.9 deaths per every 100,000. The United States median is reported at 126.7 per every 100,000. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women across the nation.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, heart disease and stroke are among the top five leading causes of death in Texas. The American Heart Association reports that nearly 2,200 Americans dies of Cardiovascular Disease each day.

The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices.

Throughout the month of February, and the entire year the Maverick County Hospital District increase awareness and implement different programs and events to bring attention to the disease as well as encouraging people to live healthier.
