National Stroke Awareness Month

The month of May is designated as National Stroke Awareness Month throughout the United States. Strokes can happen to anyone, at any time, at any age. In America today, stroke in young adults is increasing at an alarming rate. On top of that, 73% of young Americans are not familiar with stroke symptoms and the need for urgent medical attention.

Maverick County Hospital District is observing National Stroke Awareness Month and highlighting the services of Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Lon Walder, DO, and bringing attention to learning about the effects of irregular heart beat and uncontrolled blood pressure.

Locally, the ailment is a concerning and a very serious issue as stroke deaths statistics from state information report that on average 18 individuals die of a stroke in Maverick County annually. This number could be higher depending on how many individuals do live through a stroke but later on succumb to the disease from its complications. Bringing awareness and understanding symptoms and consequences of the disease could help save your life or the life of a loved one.

Maverick County Hospital District unites with the medical community in bringing attention to this disorder. Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Walder specializes in imaging and other diagnostic techniques to evaluate blood flow and pressure in the coronary arteries and chambers of the heart, as well as technical procedures and medications to treat anormalities that impair the funciton of the cardiovascular system.
