Maverick County Hospital District Observes National Diabetes Month

? Maverick County Hospital District is observing National Diabetes Month during the month of November.

? National Diabetes Month is an annual observance held in November to highlight the importance of diabetes awareness, and focuses on informing communities of the links between diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. It can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease, and other health problems if it’s not controlled. One in 10 Americans have diabetes – that’s more than 30 million people. Additionally, 84 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Adults with diabetes are nearly twice as likely to die from heart disease or stroke as people without diabetes.

? Maverick County Hospital District Chief Executive Officer Alma Martinez asks the community to join the organization for the activities throughout November.

? “This month, our organization is focusing on bringing awareness to diabetes,” said Chief Executive Officer Alma Martinez. “As we continue to focus on preventive care, National Diabetes Month gives us an opportunity to focus on this life-threatening disease and supply the citizens of our community the resources and information they need to ensure they take the necessary steps to lower their risk of developing it.”

? Through National Diabetes Month, Maverick County Hospital District will be organizing activities and sharing information in an effort to raise awareness and encourage the community to make healthy changes to their diet and lifestyle.
