Maverick County Hospital District is observing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) throughout October, highlighting its Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Program.
Maverick County Hospital District physicians, administrators, and its Board of Trustees are focused on raising awareness for breast cancer. Other than adopting a healthier lifestyle, early detection with regular mammograms remain the single most effective way for combating the disease.
“This month, we want to make sure that our organization is devoted to raising breast cancer awareness in our community,” commented Luiza Garza, Director of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Program. “We want to ensure that women are proactive about their health by having regular screenings that include clinical breast exams, mammograms, and pap smears.”
Through its Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Program, Maverick County Hospital District offers individuals assistance related to breast cancer. This program is available to eligible Texas residents of Maverick, Val Verde, Dimmitt, Uvalde, Zavala, Kinney County, Edwards, Tom Green, and Real counties, who are not eligible for Medicaid or do not have any other form of health coverage.
Eligibility is based on residency, income, and resource guidelines per household. The Breast and Cervical Cancer Service Program provides quality, low-cost Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer Screening/Diagnostic services for eligible Women 18 years and older.
“Breast cancer is the second-deadliest cancer among women in America,” continued Director Garza. “Though breast cancer generally strikes women, it can also affect men. Healthcare providers recommend that all women over the age of 40 get annual mammograms.”
