Maverick County Hospital District supports American Heart Month

February 5, 2015

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. To prevent heart
disease and increase awareness of its effects, Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) is
proudly participating in American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading
cause of death, both in Texas and the nation. According to the Texas Vital Statistics, Center
for Health Statistics, Texas Department of State Health Services heart disease and stroke
were, respectively, the first and third leading causes of death in Texas. Also agreeing is the
American Heart Association (AHA), with mortality data reflecting that nearly 2,200
Americans died of CVD each day, an average of one death every 39 seconds. The good
news is heart disease can often be prevented when people make health choices and
manage their health conditions. MCHD is joining efforts with communities, health
professionals and families to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices.

On Feb. 6, MCHD is participating in National Wear Red Day®. Go Red for Women is the
American Heart Association’s national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women
because it’s not just a man’s disease. In fact, more women than men die every year from
heart disease and stroke. National Wear Red Day® — the first Friday each February — is a
day to bring attention to this staggering fact. You’re encouraged to wear red, know your
cardiovascular risk and take action to live longer, healthier lives. For more information,
please visit GoRedForWomen.org. MCHD is also a table sponsor for the Annual Healthy
Heart Health Fair with Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center on Thursday, February 19th
from 7:30 am to 11:00 pm.

On Feb. 20, the Physician Specialty Group will host a Health Heart Awareness Fair that will
take place at the Maverick County Hospital District Medical Office Building 9:30 am to 2:00
pm. This is an initiative to promote awareness and educate the local residents of Eagle
Pass and the surrounding counties about heart disease and stroke. Guest speaker will be
James J. Galizia, MD, FACC joined by other local programs and agencies that will be at
hand to give information and do free screenings.
Throughout the month of February, MCHD will be spreading the word about strategies for
preventing heart disease and encourage people to live heart healthy lives.
You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling
and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To
lower your risk:
– Watch your weight.
– Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
-Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
-If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
-Get active and eat healthy.

To schedule an appointment with your local Cardiologist, Dr. James Galizia call 830-757-4900
or visit us at 3406 Bob Rogers Dr., Suite 260 in Eagle Pass, Texas.
